Bilko aims for biggest year yet in 2009 {30 January 2009 }
Leading international FMX star Blake ‘Bilko’ Williams has his sights set on another groundbreaking year in 2009, ready to rebound from injury as strong as ever.
The 23-year-old hit the headlines early in 2008 after claiming a sensational win at the opening round of the Dew Tour in Baltimore, but was sidelined following a crash during an invitational at the Mexico X Games.
Watching his Dew Tour lead slip away was just as painful for Williams as the injuries sustained, he admitted.
“I spent weeks visiting doctors and days in surgery to repair a torn ACL, both broken metar tarsals, damaged meniscus tissue and a cracked heel bone,” he said.
“It was devastating to have to pull out of the Tour while still holding the lead, but there was no other option.
“I spent five weeks on crutches following surgery and then began an intensive rehab program where I was referred to a doctor who had worked with other riders, as well as surfers and top UFC fighters.
“He was concerned about my previous injuries and worked heavily with me for around 8 weeks where my fitness improved out of sight.”
A relaxing Christmas break saw Williams able to focus on the year ahead.
“I’d been away for almost 7 months so it was great to catch up with family and friends,” he said.
“As soon as I could I was training again, trying to build up my strength in preparation for getting back aboard the bike.
“It took only half a day of riding before I was back hitting the ramps, landing most of my tricks on the first attempt – it was a great feeling and really brought back some confidence.”
Bilko is currently travelling and performing as part of the New Zealand Crusty Tour where he will take part in 9 shows over 5 weeks.
Over the break the Aussie added a new sponsor to his name, joining forces with Fox and continuing to enjoy a solid relationship with DVS, Monster Energy and Oakley.
“I’m excited about the year ahead,” he added. “We’ve got a big Australian tour ahead of us as well, before the Dew Tour kicks off in the US, followed by the Los Angeles X Games and the new Dubai X Games in December.”
