Bilko unlucky to miss medal at X Games {2008 }
Australian FMX frontrunner Blake Williams was left to rue 'what could have been' after a tough outing at X Games 14 in Los Angeles last week.
One of the discipline's hottest prospects following his Dew Tour breakthrough, Williams had his work cut out for him with an entry in three competitive categories.
Success at the world's biggest action sports event would be no mean feat, especially in Moto X competition which was reeling from the revelation of previous events which had set the bar higher than ever with a range of new tricks.
Bilko, a bronze medallist in the past, is known for his fearless, flat-out approach, and it came to the fore as he served up a series of stylish moves that drew acclaim from the crowd and impressed upon the judges in the Best Trick Finals.
The Victorian was unlucky to miss out on a medal, with his best score of 88.00 falling just short of the top 3, but still put on an impressive show considering he was still sore from a wrist injury sustained in practice.
Friday would present a new challenge, and Bilko breezed through the Moto X Freestyle Elimination with an 87.40 putting him amongst the frontrunners.
The next event on the schedule, however, did not go to plan, and he bowed out of finals contention for the Moto X Speed and Style showdown.
In his last appearance for the weekend, Bilko was determined to give the Freestyle Finals a shake and grab some X Games gold.
A crash in practice saw him miss the rider introductions but he made it into the arena when it counted, landing, amongst others, a crowd-pleasing 360.
It seemed luck had deserted him one last time however, with the 23-year-old eventually eliminated in the matchup bracket with eventual gold medallist Jeremy Lusk.
Despite an up and down weekend, Bilko drew positives from the event and said the results would motivate him to work on bigger and better tricks for X Games 15.
"It was a full on X Games, I didn't get much of a break and had a few spills which made it hard to put together some good scores, but the competition was just awesome and showed the sport is progressing very fast," said Williams.
"It's disappointing to miss a medal considering I was feeling pretty good about my chances heading into it, these things happen though, I know what I'm up against and can now return my focus to continuing a good run on the Dew Tour."
